With the stress that so many Americans have and are facing with the current state of the economy, I feel that our society has much to gain by integrating mindfulness-based stress reduction into our health care and education systems. With direct correlations to well-being and concentration, a focus on stress-alleviating procedures can have a real impact on improving the lifestyles of Americans.
Recently I was interviewed in an article for USA Today which reports that studies suggest the mindfulness techniques such as breathing exercises can ease pain, improve concentration and immune function, lower blood pressure, curb anxiety and insomnia, and possibly even help depression. Newer research tools, such as high-tech brain scans, show how meditation might have diverse effects.
Earlier in the month, I had an opportunity to discuss the need for ‘Mindfulness’ education with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. I’m looking forward to working with her and other lawmakers to push this initiative for the benefit of healthier Americans.
